16歳の娘のとりあえずの人生の目標は「well-read（博識）になること」。「夏休みになったら読むから注文して」と彼女が見せてくれたのがSATテスト（米国の大学が学生の学力と適正を判断するための統一テスト）を作成しているCollege Boardによる101 Great Booksのリストです。「Recommended for College-Bound Readers」とあるように、大学に進学する生徒への推薦図書のようなものです。なぜ101なのかというと、アメリカ人は101という数が好きなだけです。
「このうち何冊読んだ？」と娘がたずねるのでざっと数えたら50でした。すると「You are crazy!」といわれてしまいました（ジョージ・エリオットやトーマス・ピンチョンのようにリストの本ではなく別の作品を読んでいる作家を数えたらもっと増えますけど）。活字中毒で勉強もせずに本ばかり読んでいた私は、中学校の図書館にあるフィクションをすべて読み終えて仕方なく母が買い揃えていた河出書房新社の「世界文学全集」を読破しました。今振り返っても、なかなか良い作品が揃った全集だったわけです。たいていの家庭では本棚に飾ってあるだけの全集のようですが、わが家では少なくとも3人（母、姉、私）は全作品を読んでるはずです。「手を洗ってから読みなさい！」とか「モノを食べながら読んでは駄目」と叱られたましたが、姉と私がそれにおとなしく従った覚えはありません。今ページを開くと、中からお菓子の破片が落ちてくるかも…。
せっかく読んだものの、もともと記憶力が悪いもので内容はほぼ忘れています。英語で読んだのも10冊ちょっとだけ。もう一度英語で読み直してみようかと思いますが、ロシア語やドイツ語、フランス語のものを英語で読んでも馬鹿みたいだし（といいつつ三銃士はStanzaで無料ダウンロードしましたが）、「罪と罰」とか「戦争と平和」って、若い頃だからこそ読む気力（と体力）があり、「がが～ん」と衝撃を受けることができたような気がします。今だとすぐに挫折しそうな気が…。
