Kindleを通じて販売されていた（99セント）のGeorge Orwellの 1984 と Animal Farm が違法であったことが判明し、すでに購入していたカスタマーのライブラリから無許可でebookを削除し、その後Emailにてebook削除と返金の通知をしたという出来事がありました（7/16)、それについてカスタマー間で「AmazonはBig Brotherか！」あるいは「いったん売ったものを無断で取り返すのは泥棒と同じ」といった憤りが広まっていました(といっても「違法な本だから仕方ないじゃん」とあまり怒っていない人も多かったですが）。
それについて、昨日CEOのJeff BezosはAmazon.comのKindle Communityでこのように謝罪しました。
This is an apology for the way we previously handled illegally sold copies of 1984 and other novels on Kindle. Our "solution" to the problem was stupid, thoughtless, and painfully out of line with our principles. It is wholly self-inflicted, and we deserve the criticism we’ve received. We will use the scar tissue from this painful mistake to help make better decisions going forward, ones that match our mission.

ebook分野は未開地ですから、新たな問題が生まれるとよく考えずに対応してしまうことってあると思うのですよね。
この謝罪がもう少し早ければもっと良かったかもしれませんが、「Stupid」とちゃんと認めて今後に活かそうとしているところは好感が持てます。
