ノーベル文学賞はいよいよ明日８日発表です。
オンラインカジノの予想を以前にご紹介しましたが、発表を前にして配当率が変わっているようですね。Joyce Carol Oatesが追い上げているのが、え〜っという感じです。彼女の作品を読んですごいって思ったことがないのです。後に残らない。アメリカ人、そして女性がそろそろ取るころじゃないか、という予想なのでしょうが、Oatesだったら個人的には納得できないと思います。
さて、英国の元外交員George WaldenがBloomberg.com にRoth, ‘Ignorant’ Author, Waits in Vain for Nobelという面白い記事を書いているのでご紹介します。
本来でしたらフィリップ・ロスや最近亡くなったジョン・アップダイクが既に取っていても不思議はないのですが、アメリカ人作家はToni Morrison以来１６年も受賞していません。その理由を彼は次のように単純明瞭に説明しています。
That’s partly because the politics of American authors
aren’t as predictable as in Europe. And politics do come into
play thanks to Alfred Nobel’s will, which stipulates that the
award should go to the person who has produced “the most
outstanding work in an ideal direction.”
つい笑ったのは次の部分。

women are denied education and generally trashed. It’s hard to
swallow this at a time when there are more women in U.S.
colleges than ever and when American soldiers are helping to
ensure that Afghan girls — real victims of real religious
bigots — can go to school. But don’t bother asking for Atwood’s
take on U.S. military adventures.
ご想像どおり好意からの受賞予想ではありません。「Let’s hope I’m wrong, and that literary rather than
sociopolitical values prevail.」としめくくっています。
彼は RothかDeLilloなら納得のようですね。
私もPhilip Roth またはDon DeLilloなら納得です。Atwoodはけっこう好きな作品がありますが、最近のは？？？ですからやっぱり行くべきところに行ったほうがいいとは思います。
